When you think about the future technology of automobiles, you probably are thinking about cars driving on alternative fuels, self-driving cars, and even drone taxis. But hey, what about the future tech of tires? Tire tech is an up and coming big business boom.
Think about all of the times you've had a flat tire or had to spend hundreds of dollars on new tires because they lost their treads. In the future, your tires could inflate and seal themselves and could even be indestructible.
Here is what we can expect for the future of our vehicles' tires:
- Tires that can seal themselves. A German tire company is working on a tire that can seal itself with a goopy fluid after running over a nail. You may never even know you had a flat tire. Other companies will be rolling out this option on their new 2020 vehicle lineup.
- Airless tires. Your tires can't go flat if there is no air in them. Michelin revealed a new prototyped called Uptis, that doesn't need to be inflated, ever.
Talking tires. Imagine if your car had "smart tires" and could talk to each other and send an alert to warn of black ice and even change their shape to deal with various road conditions. - 3D printed tires. It seems everything is headed to 3D printing; even the space station uses it to replace tools. In the future, instead of replacing a bald tire, you could just 3D print a new tread on top of your existing tires and keep going.
- Replacing rubber with more eco-friendly alternatives. In the future, your tires could be made out of dandelions and other plant material for stronger and more environmentally conducive wheels.
- Levitating tires. Yes, this sounds a little far fetched, but companies like Goodyear have been researching ways to use magnetic levitation, which suspends the tire from the car by magnetic fields". Science is cool, huh?
